This book introduces formal grammar theories that play a role in current linguistic theorizing (Phrase Structure Grammar, Transformational Grammar/Government & Binding, Generalized Phrase Structure Grammar, Lexical Functional Grammar, Categorial Grammar, Head- Driven Phrase Structure Grammar, Construction Grammar, Tree Adjoining Grammar). This chapter discusses generally recognized major contemporary currents in syntactic theory. It discusses the government-binding (GB) theory, generalized phrase structure grammar, and relationally based models of grammar. The central guiding principle of GB is that the internal structure of the grammar is modular as well.

For each of the following phrase structure rules, write out the possible sequences that each rule generates: Example: A → B (C D) E Answer: A → B E A → B C D E. This book presents the most complete exposition of the theory of head-driven phrase structure grammar (HPSG), introduced in the authors' Information-Based Syntax and Semantics.

Their origins and their role in linguistics are traced in Graffi and Matthews They currently play a key role both in transformational and non-transformational generative grammar. This book presents the most complete exposition of the theory of head-driven phrase structure grammar (HPSG), introduced in the authors' Information-Based Syntax and Semantics.

HPSG provides an integration of key ideas from the various disciplines of cognitive science, drawing on results from diverse approaches to syntactic theory, situation.

The "Generalized Phrase Structure Grammar" GPSG is a major syntactic theory which has been adopted by the computational linguistics world.

This text assumes an introductory knowledge of syntactic theory and covers all the main constructs of the grammar. Emmon's own title, ``Generalized Categorial Grammar'', sank without trace but our bit of plagiarism survived.

EJB It sank so successfully that, in Mary McGee Wood 's book on categorial grammar, she used that phrase as a generic term for all of the categorial grammars that go beyond the classical AB categorial grammar. This book introduces formal grammar theories that play a role in current linguistic theorizing (Phrase Structure Grammar, Transformational Grammar/Government & Binding, Generalized Phrase Structure Grammar, Lexical Functional Grammar, Categorial Grammar, Head- Driven Phrase Structure Grammar, Construction Grammar, Tree Adjoining Grammar).

The key assumptions are explained and it is shown. Additional Physical Format: Online version: Generalized phrase structure grammar.

Cambridge, Mass.: Harvard University Press, (OCoLC) "Generalized Phrase Structure Grammar" GPSG has become a major syntactic theory in linguistics and in this volume it receives comprehensive tutorial treatment.; The text assumes an introductory knowledge of syntactic theory and covers all the main constructs of the grammar.

This book rpovides an introduction to three contemporary syntactic theories, Government-Binding Theory, Generalized Phrase Structure Grammar, and Lexical-Functional Grammar.

In Successive chapters, Sells lucidly presents and illustrates the fundamental aspects of each theory.

The book discusses some of the major grammatical constructions of Japanese in a version of phrase structure grammar called Japanese Phrase Structure Grammar (JPSG), which is loosely based on such frameworks for phrase structure grammar as Generalized Phrase Structure Grammar (GPSG) and Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar (HPSG).
